2024 AOA | USC APEX Leadership Conference – Achieving Peak Performance
The AOA is again partnering with the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business, Executive Education to bring you the next generation of the popular APEX Leadership Program. Debuting in 2024, the AOA|USC APEX Leadership Conference: Achieving Peak Performance will shift to a one-and-a-half-day module program to address essential leadership skills required of surgeons today. AOA’s signature blend of leadership development, with direct relevance to orthopaedics and issues confronting medicine, allows individuals at any stage of their career to expand their knowledge and leadership skills.
Participants are encouraged to register and attend both conferences for a reduced registration fee as each conference will focus on specific leadership topics. Registrants may also register for individual module programs.

This session explores vital aspects of healthcare business strategy. It delves into organizational strategies for gaining a competitive advantage, offering insights on leveraging core competencies, resource utilization, and mitigating diversification, vertical integration, and geographic expansion risks. The course introduces corporate and competitive dynamics strategy concepts, focusing on assessing strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities via the resource-based view strategy framework. Additionally, it examines motives for corporate expansion and real-world examples. In parallel, the session addresses the need for adapting to disruptive change in the healthcare sector, emphasizing the importance of identifying strategic inflections while avoiding distractions. By integrating these sessions, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of business strategy and adaptability in the dynamic healthcare landscape.

This session emphasizes the imperative need for building change management capabilities in today’s turbulent world. It highlights the significance of effectively managing organizational change, stating that organizations with superior change execution will thrive long-term. The session includes an exploration of a well-established change management approach and its practical application through an online simulation. Participants will learn to implement change management best practices, gain stakeholder buy-in, and guide the company to success in the simulation. During the debriefing, critical comparisons between the sim and participants’ own organizations/departments will be discussed, with a specific focus on strategies for orthopaedic leaders to convert stakeholder resistance into support for essential organizational change initiatives.
